Indigenous-backed candidate Bernardo Arévalo has been inaugurated as the President of Guatemala despite attempts to overthrow the election results.
Indigenous leaders, along with members of the Maya, Garifuna, Xinka, and non-Indigenous communities, peacefully camped out and protested for months to ensure a smooth transition of power in Guatemala.
The peaceful transfer of power is crucial not only for democracy and to reduce the influx of migration to the United States but also for the Indigenous Peoples of Guatemala, who have long suffered from racism, marginalization, and discrimination.
