The United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) Twenty-Second Session begins on 17 April-28 April 2023. This year's theme is "Indigenous Peoples, human health, planetary and territorial health, and climate change: a rights-based Approach."
"Bridging the gap between Indigenous Peoples, Human Rights, and the Environment" has been the mission of Native Children's Survival since its founding in 1989. Through the adoption of the 13 September 2007 United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and in solidarity with our sisters and brothers, we continue our call to action for the rights of Indigenous Peoples, Mother Earth, and all our relations for the generations to come.
We are the caretakers. We walk in the footsteps of our ancestors, and today we, the Indigenous Peoples', comprise 5% of the world's population but are responsible for 80% of its biodiversity.
This year, at the 2023 PFII, the questions remain, "Will United Nations Member States join us in a rights-based approach to protect Mother Earth and all our relations? Will the Member States help us protect human rights and planetary and territorial health from manufactured artificial pollution causing the climate to change unnaturally, destructively, and at an alarming and unstainable rate? Will the Member States fully implement and honor the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples?
We shall see.
