Indigenous Peoples’ Day

October 11, 2021 | Native Children’s Survival

Since the beginning, Native Peoples lived a life of being in harmony with all that surrounds us. It is a belief that all humankind are related to each other. Each has a purpose, spirit and sacredness. It is an understanding with the Great Spirit or Creator that we will follow these ways. And in this understanding we believe we are related to all other living species.
— Dennis Banks, American Indian Movement

In 1992, the California Bay Area Indian Alliance convinced the city council of Berkeley to declare 12 October a Day of Solidarity with Indigenous Peoples. Berkeley became the first U.S. city to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day, setting a precedent for other cities and states to follow.

The origin and development of replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day began in 1977 with a delegation of Indigenous Peoples at the International Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations in the Americas. This historic conference, sponsored by the United Nations, was held at the Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland, from 20-23 September. Russell Means, national director of the American Indian Movement (AIM), followed by more than a hundred Indigenous representatives, including Onondaga Faithkeeper, Chief Oren Lyons, seen left in the photograph above, gave the keynote speech.

On October 8, 2021, Joe Biden, the 46th and current president of the United States, signed a presidential proclamation declaring October 11 to be a U.S. national holiday.

As we celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day — let us always remember and embrace the wisdom, courage, and remarkable resilience of our sisters and brothers, whose voice and vision continue to be an Indigenous Call to Consciousness.
